Area

In the green swathe of historic Tynedale midway between the ancient town of Hexham centred on its medieval Priory built over the crypt of St Wilfrid's 7th-century cathedral, and Corbridge with nearby Corstopitum, the great supply base for nearby Hadrian's Wall, Saxon church and medieval Vicar's Pele. Even nearer the romantic ruin of Dilston Castle, home of the ill-starred Earl of Derwentwater, stands above the ravine of the Devil's Water and the beautiful 17th-century Earl's Bridge. Even the local railway line the Newcastle to Carlisle, is of historic interest as the first coast-to-coast railway in the world, retaining many of its original stations and bridges.
